This is a video of the preparations within the last couple of hours before a race is run. I've always had trouble imagining how the average-looking horse I see poking its head out of the stall is the suited-up athlete I see running on the track. This helped me connect the dots. The music at the end is "Porcelain", by Moby.

Nashoba's Key, one of my favorite horses, tragically had to be put down after breaking her leg in a stall accident on May 28, 2008. In her memory, I was inspired to make this drawing. I hope to portray her fiery and competitive temperament through the veins and background colors, which are also the colors of her owner Warren Williamson's silks. Prismacolor colored pencils and chalk pastel on 9" x 12" construction paper. All photos and scans are my copyright. The music is "Everloving", by Moby.

This is video from one side of the saddling barn at Santa Anita before the Grade 1, $1 million guaranteed Santa Anita Handicap, aka "Big 'Cap." I luckily positioned myself right in front of the eventual winner - Heatseeker. Sunshine Millions - Santa Anita Park racetrack, Arcadia, California, U.S.A. - Jan. 26, 2008 Miraculously salvaged after days of rain, the wet top layer was scraped to the outside rail. Marketed as an all-weather surface, Cushion Track is anything but. Santa Anita was forced to install it by California Horse Racing Board mandate. New World Record - 6 Furlongs in 1:06:53 Bob Black Jack set the new world record winning the Sunshine Millions Dash. This track is hard and fast, yet somehow remains safe. Beginning the week of February 3, a liquid binder will be applied that will hopefully alleviate drainage problems. If this doesn't work, Santa Anita will lose many more days to rain.

Here are some clips from the 2007 Hollywood Park fall meet that I took with my new Flip video camera. Sorry about the lack of sound on the first clip. About tongue tying: the horse's tongue is pulled out of the side of the mouth and tied to the lower jaw with a piece of cloth. This prevents the tongue from accidentally interfering with a horse's airway during a race. The last clip is of the grey horse Monzante after winning in his U.S. debut. He has since won multiple stakes races including a Grade 1.
